Start Journey to Lose 70 lbs. and Build Better Habbits

For a while now, I have been content to not take things too seriously, enjoying my days working in the world of consumer cybersecurity and taking care of peoples’ security questions and needs, always looking to spread the word about the need for personal security and privacy in a time and place where both are needed now more than ever. I love my Job and have fun doing it, but that is not the only thing I love doing. I have developed a special fondness for food; I like all kinds of food, variety is king. This is also very likely the reason for another thing I love doing, eating out. If I could, I would probably eat out every meal. There are so many places to choose from, each offering their own special dishes and flavors. Fortunately for both of us, my Grandpa also loves to eat out so we go any chance we get. You don’t have to give us any excuse… Say the words, “Why don’t we just go somewhere for dinner?” and BAM, like Batman and Robin in a crime fight, we’re in! Loving it as we do and as wonderful as all these tasty dishes are, this experience does have its downsides… Which leads me to the beginning of my story.

It’s time to lose 70 pounds…yes I said 70 pounds, roughly the size of a midsized child! Our love of food has nourished me and brought me much joy, but it’s gotten a little out of hand. I now weigh 248.88 pounds – Just to put things in perspective, so that you can see why I am engaging in this journey, I have been under 180 pounds for 27 years of my now soon to be 36 years on this earth; I never really considered myself a big person, but as it stands right now, I am big, no, LARGE for my frame. For those of you who have a funny bone, I actually look a lot like Humpty Dumpty from the side 🙂 As my Grandpa still tells folks, “He’s a growing boy!” Well, I have grown alright, but I don’t think I have gotten even a lick taller, my pants size, on the other hand, is another story! Which brings us to why I am starting this journey.

I don’t really mind being larger, but it is simply getting harder to move around. And I already take medication for high blood pressure and for high triglycerides. My Grandpa Herring passed away due to heart complications. My family is going to need me and I got to be around for that; I am using that as my WHY in embarking on this journey. I have no illusions about this, this is going to be tough. Do you want to know how tough it is going to be for me? Well, if you are married, think about how much you love your wife…That’s how much I love food 🙂 While on this journey, I am going to chronicle as many days as I can on this blog and it will show the good and the bad, the successes and failures. I don’t know how long this journey to lose 70 pounds will take, but I hope that someone else who is big will read this and get inspired and start trying to get in better shape. As my friend, Christine would say. “Take care of yourself, you are worth it!” If you want to get in better shape and you are on the fence, feel free to jump in with me and follow along, comments always welcome, let’s go on a journey together 🙂 Day one starts tomorrow!

Day 1: A Good Start

Day one went pretty good and I’m pretty happy so far, I am making small changes to get the flub off. No more late night snacks, eat smaller portions, make better food choices and start moving my massive self again. I have challenged my Mom to lose weight with me and get healthy, we want to be able to do more and live better lives and be healthy so we are doing it together 🙂 Here is my first walking vlog to my Madre: #StayAccountable #GetFit #LiveRight

Made Dinner for the first time in a Long time…Family affair!

Well, today was a great day, I did get a bit of a late start, but I did accomplish what I set out to do today. We decided to give HelloFresh.com a try since I wanted to start helping my Grandma cook. So today all the ingredients for our next 3 meals came in a great big box, each meal had its own bag of stuff, with the cold items like meat in the bottom, all of it wrapped in a layer of insulation.

The three meals this week include pork grilled cheese sammiches with cucumber tomato salad, Italian orzo, and meatloaf and mash with green beans. Tonight we opted for the Italian Orzo and it was delicious, it’s basically Italian sausage, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, chicken stock, mozzarella cheese, water, salt and pepper, and Italian seasoning, all simmered in a pan and then covered with panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese, and then set under the broiler for 4 minutes until golden brown. Grandma and I cooked together for the first time in a long time and it was fun 🙂 It really turned out well and we have leftovers, W00t! So far, I would say if you like to try new things for meal time and you can afford about $110/week, HelloFresh.com is a great option, you don’t have to spend time at the grocery as everything is portioned out for only what you need.

Almost met my movement goal today, will have to kick it into high gear tomorrow, calorie intake looking good 🙂 Until the morrow, remember, get active and stay Attractive! 🙂

Down to 242 and on the down slope :)

Hazzah!! I have lost 6 pounds!! On track to meet my goal of 30 pounds down in 4 months 🙂 Grandma and I made a meal together again tonight, Grilled cheese pork sandwiches with a sweet onion jam with a side of cucumber tomato salad. I have to say, that was a fun one to cook and only took about 25 minutes to make.

I met all of my movement goals yesterday and got my walk in, I’m only about a quarter of the way there on my walking goal, I want to be able to walk for 45 minutes at a time with very little stopping or breaks, definitely going to need to step up my game Lebron and Steph Curry style 🙂

Funny for the day: I was enjoying the baseball game last night lounging in my recliner and nature was calling so I was getting ready to get up and much to my surprise, the power went off and so I thought oh man now I can’t watch the game….cutting my loses, I thought, well, I will just go the bathroom and the power will come back on so I went to de-recline my chair…ANNNDD it did NOT MOVE! That’s right folks, the joke was on me…my wonderful recliner is electric 🙂 Then I thought, surely the power will come back on in a sec….then it hits me…..I have to pee and I can’t get out of my chair! Well, the power DID NOT come back on until 3 hours later, man when it came on, I think I moved the fastest I have ever moved in a long time. Two things I learned in this experience, always have battery backups for electric devices and I can actually move pretty damn fast when I try 🙂

Until the next one folks, Get active and stay attractive 🙂

PS- We were glad to hear the good news about your friend’s cancer remission Uncle John, we will pray for them both 🙂 Next time you come, let’s make us some pizza 🙂

Day 2: Tired but doing good

It’s day 2 and I did pretty well on the food front. I had a cajun roast beef sandwich (The spice burns fat too 🙂 ) and a hamburger with a little bake beans and cold slaw for dinner. As a snack, I got me some jacklinks beef jerky (No fat snack of champions) and I loaded up on water throughout the day.

Got my walk in at Walmart running errands, Madre got her walk in today too so we are off to the races – fat your ain’t no match for us!

Oh YES, We have Hit Day 5 – Walking to Drop 70lbs

So I can say that today was indeed a good day. What normally would have been a lazy Saturday in the recliner, as was my custom almost every weekend, turned out to be a fruitful and busy day. Had Frisco breakfast sandwich from Metro Diner this AM – It is a ham, egg and cheese deal on sourdough, very good, I only ate half and then had a cup of broccoli cheddar soup. In case you have tried either I would highly recommend as they are very tasty combination sure to satisfy any appetite 🙂

After Breakfast, I got me a shave and a haircut, gotta look good for church tomorrow. I am finding that since I have started moving every day for extended periods, longer than just going from the recliner to the kitchen or that can, I have more energy and already have started feeling better. I decided to capitalize on some of this new found energy and did some much-needed cleaning and organizing of my gear, needless to say my room is quite hospitable now 🙂

Just got to keep this up and I know the pounds will fall off! Really looking forward to doing a time-lapse video over the next few months and watch the fat literally melt away 🙂

Until tomorrow folks, blessings be upon you and God go with you.
